Scott, 47 years old and a former diesel mechanic, has been with Read Write Now for over seven years. After undergoing two operations for brain tumors, Scott lost his ability to speak, read, and write. Despite these challenges, he has shown remarkable dedication and progress.
With the help of his tutor, Bev, Scott began his journey by reading Dr. Seuss books to his daughter. Over time, his reading skills improved significantly. Recently, he tackled a technical book about prospecting, which was so advanced that he had to explain much of it to Bev. This experience highlights his incredible progress and growing confidence.
Scott still needs to think carefully before speaking in unfamiliar situations, but he has regained much of his confidence. He can now read instructions, newspapers, fill in forms, write short notes. Although slower than normal he leads a busy life. Scott plans to apply for casual work with his neurologist approval, a testament to his determination and resilience. His journey highlights the importance of a growth mindset as it not only fosters resilience but also encourages lifelong learning.
As we observe Movember, a campaign dedicated to raising awareness about men’s health issues, it’s crucial to remember stories like Scott’s. They remind us that seeking help is an essential step toward personal growth.
Scott is deeply grateful to his tutor, Bev, and the Read Write Now program. His story is a powerful example of what can be achieved with perseverance and a never-give-up attitude.
