Supporting Agencies

Supporting Agencies

Working together to develop literacy and numeracy skills, one Western Australian at a time.

This page provides information on how Read Write Now may be able to help your organisation.

We have worked with various service providers, such as care agencies, employment services, NDIS providers, direct care support workers, and their clients.

There are two main areas where organisations may benefit from our services: individual tutoring and service provider training.

Individual Tutoring

Volunteer tutors assist the learning journey of each student by using individualised teaching strategies to meet each learner’s needs. Lessons are free of charge and are usually held once a week between a tutor and a student at a local library or community space. Lessons may also be delivered online through Zoom or Skype to support students in regional areas.

Applicants who apply to Read Write Now will have an initial phone call with office staff.  The purpose of the phone call is to get to know the student a little bit better. A questionnaire is used to evaluate the student’s current level to match the student’s needs with an appropriate tutor and to collect information necessary to customise the tutor’s teaching strategy. Collected information includes schooling history, any learning difficulties or pain points, motivations for learning and goals of each individual applicant.

There have been times where the skill level of the applicant is still unclear after the initial conversation. In these circumstances, a written assessment task is given for the applicant to complete with guidance from a carer and/or support worker. Both the evaluation and written assessment will then be used to determine if Read Write Now tutors can help the student. If we are confident that we will be able to provide the guidance and support the student needs, their application will progress to a local coordinator to allocate a suitable tutor and begin lessons.

For students who need a higher level of support than our tutors can provide, Read Write Now offers different training options for providers and carers supporting clients.

Service Provider Training

Read Write Now can provide specific training for service providers who are in frequent contact with applicants who need literacy and numeracy support beyond the expertise of our volunteer tutors.

The training is provided free of charge and our tutors will work with these service providers to deliver customised training, either face-to-face or online, to suit the operations of providers and the clients they support.

There are three available options for service providers.

Option 1: Training for volunteer tutors
Throughout the calendar year, Read Write Now delivers tutor training for all new volunteer tutors. Individuals and agency staff are welcome to attend these sessions. They will be required to confirm a booking date and attend two whole days of face to face training sessions and complete assigned tasks as part of the training program. Participation in the program is essential for the tutor to develop effective strategies tailored to the literacy and numeracy levels of the student.

This is also a great opportunity to learn from other volunteer tutors and trainers, share ideas and discuss possible strategies for students’ differing literacy and numeracy levels.

This is non accredited training.

Option 2: Customised agency support training
Read Write Now can customise a literacy and numeracy program for your staff who work with clients or who are directly involved in achieve agency goals.

The development of a customised program will better equip staff and enhance their understanding of literacy and numeracy strategies for the benefit of their client.

Option 3: Individual training for case workers, support workers or staff working in direct care of clients.
Additional literacy and numeracy support and strategies are available for staff who directly care for clients.

We will provide you with strategies, techniques and resources that our tutors use to help guide your client’s literacy and numeracy development.
