Study Support

Studying can be challenging, so it’s important to access assistance to support your learning and to ensure you enjoy your student life.

Help with Studies

Do you need help with your studies?
Do you want to improve your reading, writing, maths or basic computer skills?

Perhaps maths isn't your strong suit, or you find it difficult to express ideas in
writing for essays or assignments. If you need help like this, we can offer you free one on one tutoring.

Your tutor will work closely with you on setting and achieving your study goals.
Learning lessons and materials are aligned with your interests, invididual learning level,
learning styles and everyday experiences.

Tutoring lessons may help you with:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • English as a second language
  • Maths
  • Digital skills
  • Communication skills
  • Academic writing skills
  • Self-directed ways of learning
  • Managing study workload and meeting deadlines
  • Setting short-term and long-term study goals

Success in any learning area relies on a student's ability to use the distinct literacy
that is important for that subject area or concept.

The key ideas for literacy are organised into six interrelated elements in the learning
continuum, as shown in the figure (Australian Curriculum).

Supporting students, lecturers and families
A range of factors have an influence on a student’s performance in literacy, including their educational background, the language(s) spoken at home, and whether English is an additional language. Different learning needs such as dyslexia, vision/hearing impairment or ADHD also need to be considered.

Read Write Now supports students, lecturers and families through individualised, tailored one-on-one support either through tutoring at a public library or through valuable classroom assistance such as at the Midland Youth Hub

Student Stories

  • After leaving school at 17 and getting a job in the construction industry Darren was struck down with a back injury some years later. This encouraged him to think about what he’d like to do in the future and decided to study Cert IV Community Services at NMTAFE. This eventually led him to being a support worker and then to study at university. As TAFE studies required computer and study skills, Darren tried many avenues to get the support required and finally found Read Write Now by calling their hotline at 1800 018 802.  RWN Tutor, Sheree, readily provided hands-on and disciplined support which has taken place weekly since early 2020.

Darren2-(1).jpg            To begin with, Darren learnt the intricacies of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and keyboard skills
to help with writing assignments, delivering presentations and writing workplace notes.
He then progressed his passion for counselling by applying to university and
committing to undergraduate studies. This demonstrates Darren and Sheree’s mutual advocacy
of lifelong learning and the commitment of the Read Write Now community who assists learners to formulate and achieve learning goals.

The Adult Learner's Week scholarship will help Darren to fully immerse himself in
continued learning and for Sheree to bask in her student’s success.
