Supporting Those Who Support Others: Literacy Training for Frontline Workers and Volunteers

Read Write Now offers more than tutoring—we also work with agencies, support workers, volunteer organisations, and individuals who assist clients with literacy and numeracy challenges.

Many adult learners — especially those supported under the NDIS model — require more intensive, ongoing support than the weekly assistance Read Write Now tutors can provide. Each applicant has an initial phone conversation with our office to help us understand their learning goals, background, and any challenges they may face. If we’re confident we can meet their needs, the application is referred to a local coordinator to match them with a suitable tutor.

For adult learners who need more specialised support, we invite their support worker, volunteer, or family member to take part in our literacy training program. This equips them with the skills and confidence to support their adult learner’s literacy and numeracy development, and gives them access to our Tutor Portal, practical resources, and ongoing guidance.

To participate in the literacy training program, please complete the application form, confirm a training date, attend two full days of face-to-face training, and complete all assigned tasks. Participation in the program is essential to develop effective tutoring strategies tailored to the literacy and numeracy levels of the adult learner.

Whether you're part of an agency, another volunteer organisation, or an individual keen to support others, Read Write Now can help you:

  • Identify literacy and numeracy needs
  • Apply practical strategies in real-world contexts
  • Access free, high-quality resources
  • Receive ongoing support from our Central Office team and tutor community

If YOU or your organisation would like to learn more, please contact the Read Write Now team on 1800 018 802 or email us to discuss our services and training support options.

We’re here to help those who help others, and can provide customised service provider training designed to build staff capacity and embed literacy support into everyday service delivery.

Service Provider Training

Read Write Now can provide specific training for service providers who are in frequent contact with applicants who need literacy and numeracy support beyond the expertise of our volunteer tutors.

The training is provided free of charge and our training and literacy officer will work with these service providers to deliver customised training, either face-to-face or online, to suit the operations of providers and the clients they support.

A recent example is our partnership with Outcare, a justice and reintegration service in WA. Seven of their support workers completed our tutor training program, gaining practical skills in reading, writing, spelling, lesson planning, and adult learning. This has enabled Outcare to offer more targeted literacy support to clients navigating the justice system.
