National Skills Week

Jaweed, a motivated, quietly spoken young man born in
Afghanistan contacted Read Write Now
as he experienced difficulties understanding written
English in the workplace and needed help with
improving his level of maths for his plumbing apprenticeship.

With his dedication and the support of his tutor
he successfully reached his goals.

The Australian Apprenticeships & Traineeships Information Service (AATIS) highlights the growing importance of language, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy (LLND) in order to successfully complete an Australian apprenticeship and to participate and thrive in the workforce.

It is a common misconception that only some vocational pathways require LLND, known as foundational skills. Whilst for some pathways higher foundational skills are needed, such as an electrical apprentice requiring strong numeracy skills, foundational skills benefit all workers by improving business understanding, competency, performance and productivity.

Read Write Now and the national Reading Writing Hotline often receive distressed calls from apprentices and their parents stating that their bosses tell them that they may lose their jobs if they don’t improve their foundation skills. This can also happen after the apprentice has already worked for months or years wondering if they are able to complete their qualification.

Read Write Now offers apprentices in Western Australia free one on one literacy tutoring to support them to complete their qualification.

DID YOU KNOW, Read Write Now volunteer tutoring began in 1977 to support apprentices with literacy needs.
